Durham Intermediate students Ford Renner, Andrew Hallenbeck, Isaiah Gardner, and Thomas Highsmith competed as four of the top ten finalists for the Red Steagall Youth Poetry Contest this past weekend, October 27-29.
Each student wrote a poem reflecting an understanding and creative use of cowboy language. Poem topics related to the western life such as ranching, animals, home, family and events. The poems were also judged on the understanding and appreciation of western heritage.
The Youth Poetry Contest was a part of the 27th Annual Red Steagall Cowboy Gathering and Western Swing Festival. This premiere celebration of the nation’s premier western heritage event has been voted ‘Best Gathering and Best Family Event’ by the readers of American Cowboy Magazine.
