MLK Celebration set for Jan. 15

The 34th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration is planned for 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Jan. 15. The public is invited to the event at the Fort Worth Convention Center, 1201 Houston St. (near the Houston Street arena entrance).

The theme for the event is One Night With A King and honors the 1959 visit by King to Fort Worth, where he spent a night as a guest in the home of teacher and author Vada Felder. The Felder home still stands on Stewart Street, and historians and preservationists hope to turn it into a civil rights landmark and museum.

The program will include a recitation of Coretta Scott King’s The Meaning of the King Holiday and a presentation and panel discussion on Felder’s work.

This event is hosted by the City of Fort Worth MLK/Juneteenth Employee Committee and is presented in collaboration with the city’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

A number of other events honoring King are scheduled. Call 817-966-7625 for details. For details on the MLK Day Parade, call 817-247-7964.
