Police officers take a break from patrol to read with a child

The Fort Worth Police Department and the Bike Support Group is sponsoring Badges with Books, an initiative that allows officers to provide books to children. The books are donated by members of the Fort Worth community.

Officers are encouraged to provide a book to a child in the neighborhood in which they patrol, then take a moment to discuss the last book the child read and to read a portion of the new book with the child.

Research shows that reading aloud to a child improves literacy and ensures the child is more likely to develop a love of reading on their own.

Monetary donations to purchase books for children are being accepted online.
