November 2019: Southlake Business Spotlight – Whimsy Cookie Company

Whimsy Cookie Company began in 2007, by Founder & Co-Owner, Laurie Suriff. Laurie grew up baking alongside her mother, and her secret sugar cookie recipe was always Laurie’s favorite. This helped shape Laurie’s love of baking. Laurie’s husband needed a creative Christmas gift for his clients one year, and Laurie mentioned she could make them all custom cookies. The response from these was so overwhelming that she began getting requests from friends and family. From this success, Laurie decided to start Whimsy Cookie Company out of her kitchen.

Over the next three years the Suriff Family saw a lot of cookies. Laurie sold to everyone imaginable, including cookies for family, and friends, for baby showers, weddings, birthdays, tailgating, etc. Laurie’s incredibly yummy sugar cookie recipe along with her talented “Whimsical” decorating style quickly began spreading throughout the Memphis, TN area. Whimsy grew quickly by word of mouth and over the next few years Laurie accumulated several hundred clients.

In the Fall of 2011, Laurie received an email from Leigh Anne Tuohy to place an order for Baltimore Raven’s themed cookies for their tailgate event for their son, Michael Oher. Leigh Anne and Collins Tuohy had tasted Laurie’s cookies at a school event of SJ (Collins little brother) and fell in love with Whimsy! Soon after that, Collins also began ordering cookies for her events and friends.

Collins approached Laurie in winter 2012 with the idea of joining talents to make Whimsy Cookie Company even better. She and Laurie became equal business partners in Whimsy Cookie Company! About a year later Whimsy Cookie moved to the “Whimsy House” in Memphis, TN. This is a dream location in a hundred-year-old house on the main street that runs through Memphis. This allowed them to give the retail experience their clients were really looking for. The words used to describe the experience in the Whimsy House are magical, fun, happy, welcoming, sparkly, pink, precious, and a whole lot of WHIMSY! Now.Whimsy Cookie has opened a location in Southlake for a WHIMSY experience in Texas.

Faculty Spotlight: Shereah Taylor

It’s April 2019 and Shereah Taylor is going through withdrawal.

No, not that kind. Nothing to do with what one might smoke, snort or swig. Rather, it’s that conflicted, kind of empty feeling that comes when a very long, but very rewarding project reaches an end.

Taylor, associate professor and coordinator of TCC South’s Teacher Education Program, just ended a six-year odyssey from the Faculty Senate through the Faculty Association presidency to chairing the Joint Consultation Committee (JCC), the faculty’s Collegewide liaison to the administration.

“It’s kind of hard

April 2019: Southlake Business Spotlight – Shake Shack

Shake Shack sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan, New York to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. The cart was quite the success. Shack fans lined up daily for at least three summers which inspired the opening of a permanent kiosk in 2004.

After its launch, Shake Shack became the modern day “roadside” burger stand serving up burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, shakes, beer, wine and more.

The kiosk instantly became known as a neighborhood fixture serving customers from all over the city, country and world fresh, simple, high-quality versions of their favorite classics. The rest, as they say, is burger history.

“We sell burgers, fries and shacks, but what we serve at Shake Shack is hospitality,” said General Manager of Southlake Shake Shack, Shannyn Taggart. “A warm community gathering place is really what we inspire to be for the communities that we are in.”

Shake Shack is proud to stand behind their mission statement which is, “Stand for Something Good” not only by providing great customer service but also serving a high-quality product.

All of their meat is hormone free, antibiotic free, vegetarian feed, ground fresh and does not come frozen. The eggs are cage-free and there is no high fructose corn syrup used in their custards, they only use cane sugar. Their food is also non-GMO.

“Standing for something good and standing for what you feed your family; we feel like that is valuable,” said Taggart.

Come visit the newest Shake Shack in Southlake Town Square located at 125 Central Avenue.
